Your article highlights a truth that many people choose to ignore. which is that poor or working-class women often provided much of the emotional and financial support for their families as well as all of the physical labor.

They were often rewarded by becoming punching bags for little tyrants. They were prisoners in awful marriages because society, family, and religion gave them no other options.

Of course, not all marriages were like this but many were unhappy.

People think that long marriage offered women security and protection but the reality was not always so cut and dry.
