I think the difference is that a lot of people think "escorts" in this country are kind of (maybe unfairly) high end prostitutes. The Japan services are totally sex free and the guys basically give the girls the "boyfriend" experience without the sex. Also, most of the guys are very good looking with the J-Pop idol type of look., so I guess you pay for a nice date with a cute guy.
