I know a family where the woman is a corporate executive with a stressful job and her husband is a musician who sort of works when he wants though gigs and random teaching. They have told their son and daughter that they both make the same salary because they did not want the children to think "less" of their father. In truth, the wife's earnings provide for probably 95% of their lifestyle.

Now the son has told his mother that he wants to be a musician because he thinks he can earn a lot of money and not always be stressed out like mom.

There is nothing wrong with earning less money but now they have created a scenario for their children where they have no clue about the real world just to preserve the husband's ego.
